Settembre in Calabria è un mese ancora abbastanza caldo ma non torrido come luglio o agosto. Le giornate sono assai piacevoli e di sera, specialmente nelle zone di mare, si può benissimo indossare una leggera giacca o una maglietta. La temperatura media diurna si aggira attorno ai ventisei gradi, e nel tardo ancora assolato pomeriggio, il ponentino fa cullare i raggi del sole sulle onde turchine del Tirreno. La presenza di bagnanti sulle spiagge ci suggerisce che l’acqua è ancora sufficientemente calda.

Stiamo viaggiando comodamente, senza traffico eccessivo, sull’Autostrada del Mediterraneo, che dall’aeroporto di Lamezia Terme ci porta al nostro hotel vicino a Villa san Giovanni. Lo spettacolo che si apre sotto i nostri occhi, costeggiando il tratto della litoranea che da Palmi, all’ombra del Monte Sant’Elia si allunga in direzione sud e poi attraverso ponti e gallerie, colline verdeggianti, castagneti, uliveti e pini, e che da Bagnara arriva rasentando la costa fino a Scilla, è a dir poco mozzafiato.

E` un pomeriggio limpido con qualche ciuffetto di distanti bianche nuvole innocue e dai finestrini del pullman si possono vedere benissimo le isole Eolie. Vulcano, con il suo consueto pennacchio grigio, assieme alle sorelle Lipari e Panarea fa l’occhiolino ai nostri passeggeri. Alcuni freneticamente, dimenticando la fatica delle tante ore di volo, si appiccicano agli sportellini del pullman, con telefonini e macchine fotografiche per non perdere l’occasione di cogliere uno scatto ricordo di una panoramica spettacolare che ci portano a mente la costiera Amalfitana o delle Cinque Terre.

All’altezza di Torre Cavallo, lasciamo un’altra magnifica veduta per prendere lo svincolo per Santa Trada che ci porterà all’Altafiumara Resort & SPA, un complesso alberghiero di lusso affacciato sulla Costa Viola, a pochi chilometri da Scilla, in provincia di Reggio Calabria.

Il manager dell’Altafiumara, accorre a salutarci mentre Il nostro bravo autista Domenico appresta a scaricare le valigie e il personale dell’hotel si da` da fare affinché il check-in vada tutto liscio. Giuseppe Macrì, cordiale ed attento ai particolari, ci invita a scendere giù al ristorante, dove è pronto per noi un rinfresco a base di cocktails, prosecco e assaggini.

Dirimpetto al ristorante si allarga una spettacolare piscina a-sfioro, costruita su una grande terrazza che si affaccia proprio sullo stretto di Messina da dove si può ammirare tutta la Costa Viola da Palmi sino a Villa San Giovanni, e mentre ci gustiamo un buon aperitivo, ammiriamo i traghetti che vanno e vengono dalla Sicilia.  La serata proseguirà con una   cena a base   di pesce   spada e   delizie   locali,   allietata dal   gruppo   etnico-   popolare “Cerseyo” di   Serra San Bruno.

Although not as hot as July or August, the month of September is still quite warm in Calabria. You can enjoy very pleasant climate during the day and comfortably wear a light jacket or a sweater in the evenings, especially along coastal areas. The average daytime temperature is around twenty-six degrees, and in the late afternoon, the westerly wind lulls the sun’s rays on the turquoise waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The presence of bathers on the beaches suggests that the water is still quite warm.

Traffic is light and we comfortably travel along the Mediterranean AutoRoute from the Lamezia Terme airport to our hotel near Villa San Giovanni. Cruising along the littoral highway in a southerly direction on the road that stretches from Palmi, at the foot of Mount Sant’Elia, across bridges and tunnels, verdant hills, chestnut trees, olive groves, and pines to Bagnara and along the coast up to Scilla, some truly breathtaking views open up in front of us.

It is a clear afternoon with a few tufts of distant white harmless clouds and from the windows of the bus, you can clearly see the Aeolian Islands. Vulcano, with its usual gray plume, and his sisters Lipari and Panarea, wink at our passengers. Not even the fatigue of the many hours of flight will keep them away now from the bus windows and a few frantically reach for their cell phones and cameras to take a shot of the spectacular panorama that unfolds before their eyes; vistas reminiscent of the Amalfi coast or the Cinque Terre.

At Torre Cavallo, we leave behind another magnificent view and exit at Santa Trada to go to the Altafiumara Resort & SPA, a luxury hotel complex overlooking the Costa Viola, a few kilometers from Scilla, in the province of Reggio Calabria.

The Altafiumara manager comes to greet us while our amazing driver Domenico prepares to unload the bags. The hotel staff makes sure that check-in goes smoothly. Giuseppe Macrì, a friendly and attentive manager, invites us to go down to the restaurant, where cocktails and prosecco are ready for us.

Opposite the restaurant there is a spectacular infinity pool, built on a large terrace that overlooks the Strait of Messina from where you can admire the entire Costa Viola that stretches from Palmi to Villa San Giovanni. We enjoy a good aperitif watching the ferries that come and go from Sicily.

The evening will continue with a swordfish dinner and local delicacies, enlivened by the ethnic-popular group of Serra San Bruno “Cerseyo”.
