Our tour continues today with a visit to Tropea.

Tropea is about thirty kilometres south of Pizzo Calabro. One of the most famous seaside resorts of the South of Italy, Tropea is certainly a mandatory destination for those visiting Calabria.

The most famous feature of this charming town overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of the Calabrian shoreline is the church of the Madonna of Santa Maria dell’Isola, situated on a sandy promontory once partially submerged periodically by the high tide, which would isolate it from the rest of the coast turning it into a temporary island. Legend has it that Hercules built a stronghold on this promontory. It was Scipio the African, in the second century BC, who turned Tropea into a military garrison, at the time of the Punic Wars. The origins of this splendid church destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1905 and rebuilt in present times date back to the 600s. In the eighth century a statue of the Madonna, perhaps originating from the East has miraculously washed ashore on the beach of Tropea facing the church. In the Norman cathedral of Tropea, there is also an image of the Virgin of Romania, of Byzantine origin dating back to the 1300s, to which various miracles are attributed. Tradition has it that the city of Tropea has been saved many times by Saracen raids and earthquakes over the centuries. During the Second World War, the intervention of the Virgin during an aerial bombardment prevented the bombs from exploding and thus sparing most of the city.

In addition to beautiful beaches, breathtaking views that you can take in from numerous terraces and small squares overlooking the “Costa degli Dei” [the Coast of the Gods], and the many local traditions, Tropea offers visitors a full gamut of gastronomic adventures and interesting excursions. For example, exclusive and inexpensive mini cruises to the Aeolian Islands are available daily from Tropea. The town is abuzz year-round, but especially from June to September when it comes alive with people pouring into the medieval streets and into a plethora of restaurants to taste local delicacies. We especially note the hot, red peppers, the various seafood dishes and the ‘nduja, a spicy pork spread used in homemade pasta dishes (fileja) and on pizzas; but we cannot forget the famous red onion of Tropea. This variety of onions grows only in the particular microclimate of the Tropea area. Its nutritional properties are very different from the other more common species. It is rich in antioxidants and has therapeutic and medicinal active ingredients including the one found in Viagra; red on the outside and white on the inside, its sweet and delicate taste makes it particularly suitable for “au gratin” dishes, sauces, or pizzas but in Tropea, it is also used in the preparation of sweets and desserts.

At the end of a very pleasant day spent exploring and savouring the wonders of this small town, we stop to enjoy an ice cream, a Tropea red onion ice cream. Viaggio in Calabria e Sicilia: Tropea

Il nostro tour continua oggi con una visita a Tropea.

Tropea si trova a una trentina di chilometri a sud di Pizzo Calabro. Una tra le più rinomate località balneari del Meridione, Tropea è sicuramente una meta obbligatoria per chi visita la Calabria.

La caratteristica più nota di questa ridente cittadina affacciata sul litorale tirreno della costa calabrese, è la chiesa della Madonna di Santa Maria dell’Isola, situata su un promontorio sabbioso che l’alta marea lo sommergeva parzialmente, isolandolo periodicamente dal resto della costa e lo trasformava in un’isola temporanea. La leggenda vuole che Ercole costruisse su questo promontorio una roccaforte. Fu Scipione l’Africano, nel secondo secolo avanti Cristo, a far di Tropea un presidio militare, al tempo delle guerre puniche. Le origini di questa splendida chiesa, distrutta da un terribile terremoto nel 1905 e ricostruita in tempi presenti, risalgono al 600. Nell’ottavo secolo una statuetta della madonna, forse proveniente dall’oriente, miracolosamente si arenò sulla spiaggia di Tropea prospiciente la chiesa. Nella cattedrale normanna di Tropea si conserva anche un’immagine della Vergine di Romania, di origine bizantina del 1300 cui sono attribuiti diversi miracoli. La tradizione vuole che la città di Tropea sia stata salvata molte volte da incursioni saracene e da terremoti nel corso dei secoli. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, l’intervento della Vergine durante un bombardamento aereo, fece sì che le bombe rimanessero inesplose e la città pressoché illesa.

Oltre alle belle spiagge, le vedute mozzafiato dalle tante terrazze e dalle piazzette affacciate sulla Costa degli Dei e delle tradizioni locali, Tropea offre ai visitatori un soggiorno carico di gastronomia e altre escursioni interessanti. Ad esempio, interessante mini crociere giornaliere che costano pochissimo, partono da Tropea per le isole Eolie tutti i giorni. La cittadina è piena di turisti tutto l’anno, ma in particolar modo da giugno a settembre, quando si anima di gente che si riversa nelle stradine dell’antico borgo medievale e vari ristoranti per assaggiare le delizie locali. Notiamo soprattutto, il peperoncino piccante, i vari piatti a basi di pesce e frutti di mare o alla ‘nduja – una salsa di maiale piccante usata nei primi piatti di pasta casareccia (fileja) o le pizze; ma non possiamo dimenticare la famosa cipolla rossa di Tropea. Questa varietà di cipolla cresce si coltiva solo qui` a Tropea, per via del microclima particolare della zona ed ha delle proprietà alimentari e nutrizionali ben diverse dalle altre specie più comuni. E` ricca di antiossidanti e d’ingredienti attivi terapeutici e medicinali tra cui anche quelli presenti nel Viagra. Rossa all’esterno e bianca all’interno, il suo sapore dolce e delicato la rende particolarmente adatta a piatti gratinati, sughi, o pizze ma a tropea è usata anche nella preparazione di dolci.
